Walking

East Lothian offers a great variety of landscapes for walking, with the Lammermuir Hills to the south, a coast of beaches and cliffs and an expanse of arable farmland in between – it’s a great way to explore!

Many of the routes go to or pass vantage points offering views of the surrounding rolling countryside and spectacular coastline. There are lots of hidden gems - river valleys, woodlands, secret bays and historic sites. You can walk the length of the East Lothian coast, 45miles (73km) from Edinburgh to the west of East Lothian to the Scottish Borders to the east.

Plan where you will stop for refreshments as you pass through welcoming towns and villages with cafes, restaurants and take aways that cater for all tastes.

Make sure to check your route before you set out to ensure that the terrain is suitable for you, that you are wearing the correct footwear and have appropriate equipment and provisions.
