Located next to the award winning Scottish Seabird Centre is the delightful remains of a 12th –16th century chapel. This lovely chapel is located on what is now a grassy coastal promontory next to the harbour and is all that remains of a highly significant area of early medieval settlement, religion and burial since at least the 8th century AD.
A number of excavations have taken place at the site over the last ten years and the findings of this work have been presented through a series of impressive interpretation boards on the site. The whitewashed 16th century porch also serves as a small interpretation centre.
North Berwick was a highly significant point along a medieval pilgrimage route. Pilgrims from all over Scotland and beyond would have visited this impressive small church before crossing the Firth of Forth to complete their journey to St Andrews in Fife.
