From Friday 23rd November to Sunday 2nd December, East Lothian is delighted to be staging The Saltire 2012, celebrating its fame as Home of the Scottish Flag.  Great activities and events throughout the county are planned to appeal to visitors and local people alike. 

BUILDING ON THE SUCCESSFUL EVENTS OF THE PREVIOUS THREE YEARS, The Saltire 2012 has been expanded to a nine day festival of music culture and heritage.

Barbara Dickson in Concert

Barbara Dickson is one of Scotland's most famous exports with a career spanning more than 30 years.  Now returning to her roots, Barbara will draw on her early years in folk clubs for an enchanting evening with her distinctive interpretation of the very best of Scottish music.  She will be accompanied by Nick Holland, and support will be by East Lothian's own Alex Hodgson.

A celebration of the best in music and verse that Scotland and East Lothian has to offer.  Contributions from Barbara Dickson, North Berwick Community Choir, Fiona and Kirsty Johnson, Caitin Bruce, Alan Gay and Colin Will, as well as an East Lothian Primary School choir.  An inspiring afternoon.

The Saltire 2012 Haddington Farmers' Market

9am - 1pm

A shopper's paradise with over 20 stallholders - a great opportunity for producers to meet customers face to face.  Eggs, cheese, organic vegetables, honey, ice cream, homemade jams, fresh trout and smoked salmon, local beef, lamb, pork and venison - why not give them a try.  There's home-baking and regional drinks including liqueurs, plus a selection of handmade crafts and herbaceous plants waiting to enhance your home and garden.  Look out for the free Cullen Skink and pick up the St. Andrew's Day menu.

All this plus entertainment from Haddington Pipe Band, The Dunbar Highland Dancers and the wonderful voice and unique songs of up-and-coming youngster, Megan Davidson.


Sunday 25th November

Home of the Flag Celebrations - Athlestaneford

11am - 1pm

Following a service at 11am in the beautiful historic Athelstaneford Church, there will be a ceremonial handing over of the Flag, featuring local children singing Phil Cunningham's Saltire anthem, followed by a spectacular street parade with a giant flag.  After some free lunch in the village hall, the Flag will be taken overland by horseback to Haddington where it will be raised outside St. Mary's Parish Church.

 


Monday 26th November - Wednesday 28th November

Saltire Education Events

A competition with local primary schools to sing "Touch the Sky".  The winning school will record the song at Castlesound Studios and perform the song at the Scottish Music and Literature Ceremony on Sunday 2nd December.

A competition for the High Schools to take part in "Stramash" a new Scottish board game with the winning school taking part at the Scottish Archery Centre at Fenton Barns.

All primary schools will take part in a St. Andrew's Day school lunch menu, and there will be prizes for the best Saltire themed dining room, as well as a quiz about The Saltire and the Birthplace of the Flag.

Feast 'n' Folk

A selection of East Lothian's top restaurants and bars are celebrating St. Andrew's Day with special menus accompanied by the best of Scottish (in its broadest sense) musical entertainment.

Haddington Pipe Band Whisky Dinner - Town House, Haddington

7.30pm

The band will be hosting a fundraising Whisky Dinner in the Town House, Haddington.  This will take the form of a three-course meal with a complimentary (and complementary) whisky for each course.

There will also be a raffle, auction and music during the evening.

Tickets are £20 but if you get a table of eight together they go down to £18
