East Lothian - The Perfect Coach And Tour Destination

Discover castles, gardens, picturesque villages and award winning visitor attractions as you journey through some of the country’s most beautiful scenery.

Described as Edinburgh’s Coast & Countryside, East Lothian is right on the capital’s doorstep and is the perfect base from which to explore. Over 40 miles of magnificent coastline mixes award-winning beaches with stunning cliffs and the world’s finest selection of links golf courses.

With so much to see and do, East Lothian really is the perfect destination for coach and tour groups. There is plenty of free parking in each of the towns and at most of the visitor attractions.

East Lothian has rail links at North Berwick and Dunbar and the A1 road travels north through the county to Edinburgh. Just 20 minutes away, Scotland’s vibrant capital city and its Festivals are easily accessible.

Although we have given you these itineraries as suggestions, East Lothian has such a wealth of activities and attractions – all within easy reach – that you can easily choose to make your own bespoke trip. Why not combine some of our suggestions and stay for a holiday or short break?

Developed earlier this year, the 'Explore East Lothian' brochure provides information on six different themed tours, all of which are highlighted here on our website, but can also be downloaded click here.

While you are here you can also take time to relax and enjoy your surroundings.

The wonderful coastline boasts some of the country’s best beaches. Here are just a few:

  • Longniddry Bents
This long sandy beach has rock pools and fine views to Edinburgh and the Forth Bridges. It is also great for bird watching.
  • Gullane Bents
Edged by dunes this is a great setting for a peaceful stroll day or night with its superb views west to Edinburgh and spectacular sunsets. Sea buckthorn grows in abundance making it a haven for wildlife.
  • Yellowcraigs, Dirleton
This popular beach has great views over the Firth of Forth to the Island of Fidra – rumoured to be the inspiration for Robert Louis Stevenson’s famous novel Shipwrecked.
  • North Berwick
A string of lovely beaches in this seaside town offer stunning views to the small islands off the coast and the impressive Bass Rock.
  • Belhaven Bay, Dunbar
Belhaven is a sheltered beach with beautiful views of the East Lothian coastline. Its vast expanse of sand and impressive waves make this a must for outdoor enthusiasts, especially surfers.
