Based just 15 miles from the capital, Glenkinchie is the home of the Edinburgh Malt. Open year-round and set in the luscious countryside of East Lothian, we are amongst the most accessible and picturesque of Scotland’s great distilleries and we invite you to watch us at work.
Today, Glenkinchie is one of Scotland’s renowned Lowland brands but the distillery has gone on quite a journey to get this far. In 1825, farmers John and George Rate built and operated the distillery under the name Milton Distillery until it was licenced and renamed in 1837. Though it was transformed into a sawmill in 1853, the distillery eventually returned to its ‘natural’ – and much-improved – state, becoming the redbrick Victorian masterpiece we know today. It survived production through the Second World War and, in 1986, was selected as the Lowland representative in the Classic Malts portfolio.
We offer a wide range of tours from our Exhibition Only teaser to our Manager’s Tasting and there is every opportunity to get to know the inner workings of our distillery and sample a dram or two along the way. While many whisky fans will be familiar with the citrus and spiced notes of our core 12-year-old expression, a visit will give you unparalleled access to our broad range including our “Distillers Edition”, a complex and highly flavoursome dram that you’ll not forget in a hurry!
For visitors to the capital, we run a convenient shuttle bus service from Edinburgh city centre straight to the distillery. Please call us on 01875 342 012 to make your bookings now. Children are welcome to the exhibition, however under 8s are not permitted on the guided tour. Language boards and/or leaflets are available in a range of languages including French, Spanish, Swedish, Russian, German, Mandarin, Italian and Dutch.
We look forward to welcoming you!
