Newhailes House & Garden

Newhailes is one of the most impressive 17th Century Palladian villas in Scotland. Home to peaceful woodland walks, endless structural and decorative detailing and ‘the most learned library in Europe’, it is widely regarded as a prominent historical fixture in the Scottish Enlightenment.

With its origins in the 17th Century, Newhailes was owned from 1709 by the influential Dalrymple family. Ownership was passed down over several generations of the family, with a remodelling in 1751 and a further modernisation occurring in 1907. It lay empty from 1980 before being acquired by the National Trust for Scotland in 1997.

The interior remains a stunning visual journey in tasteful decoration. Look out for imposing Italian marble fireplaces, gilded eagles over the drawing room windows, Chinese wallpaper and an impressive art collection. For atmospherics, take a walk down the spooky servants’ tunnel, if you dare.

The estate boasts 34 hectares of tranquil scenery and several footpaths for visitors to take in the impressive views over the River Forth. Allow time for the spotting of some of the sixty species of bird that reside here. Just outside of Edinburgh, the estate makes for a perfect day trip out of the city and into East Lothian. A conservation project is current underway to improve the estate further including upgrading the gardens and creating an adventure playpark.

Access to the House is by guided tour only (advance booking is advised) and is open during the tourism season. Please visit the National Trust for Scotland website for further details on access, pricing and our series of on-site events.
