For Families

There is so much to do with all the family in East Lothian.

Popular visitor attractions in the area, many open all year round, are ideal places to take children young and old for family days out that everyone will remember! Whether you are into thrills and spills, love an interactive and creative activity, or enjoy uncovering some great stories from the past, you will not be disappointed.

East Lothian is one of the driest and sunniest places in Scotland, and when the sun is shining (and even when it's not) there is so much for you to do out of doors. The coast is truly stunning. You can try your hand at a range of watersports including surfing, stand up paddleboarding, coasteering and kayaking to name just a few. For nature lovers, there are great walks and cycle paths to explore and a trip to John Muir Country Park is a must. Further inland, the countryside and softly rolling Lammermuir Hills give you a real chance to get away from it all, enjoy the peace and quiet - oh, and the amazing views!

Step back in time and take the family along to one of our many museums or historic buildings - we have dramatic castles, stately homes, and history and heritage to keep the most enquiring minds happy. There are tranquil, colourful gardens to visit and take a leisurely stroll around. Animal lover? Well, there is lots to do, especially if you would like to get up close to wildlife and find out about different species.

It can be tricky organising a day out that keeps everyone happy, especially when you have under 5's to please. Many of our attractions and activities help make that easy for you!

Burn off some energy with a family swim in one of our swimming pools - there's sure to be one near you. Bounce to your heart's content at Jump In Trampoline Park in Musselburgh which has a dedicated mini jump area for toddlers aged 1-5. When the weather is good, nothing beats a visit to the beach for sandcastle building and rock pooling. If you love walking and cycling, there are many excellent and safe routes to explore throughout the county with viewpoints and refreshment stops along the way.

East Links Family Park is a firm favourite with locals and visitors alike, enjoy a train safari, get up close to the friendly animals, have a go on a go kart and try your hand at crazy golf.  The Scottish Seabird Centre is always a winner with its Discovery Centre where you can wildlife spot and enjoy the kids zone. The National Museum of Flight is full of wonderful aeroplanes and has indoor and outdoor exhibitions to explore - you can even step onboard Concorde!

East Lothian is home to many secret magical locations. The fairies loved Archerfield Walled Garden so much they decided to make it their home. Keep your eyes peeled and take a wander around the fairy trail to see if you can find their homes hidden in the trees. Pressmennan Wood is home to an abundance of wildlife as well as some strange magical creatures, 'Glingbobs' and 'Tootflits'. Follow the trail through the woods and remember to look high and low in the trees as you spot their little houses!
